Quinn Mountain G-scale Outdoor Model Trains
pruned plants
for garden railroads

The secret to creating small, interesting shrubs and trees for a garden railroad is to buy cheap plants, whack off the branches until you like how they look, and enjoy them. If they die, buy more and try again. Or give up on that variety and try something else. As you get more confident, buy more expensive plants. Practice makes perfect!. ;-)

Dwarf Korean lilac is 4 years old.
New branches thinned out a bit and new growth at ends of most branches nipped off every year. About 1 foot high. Blooms just like regular lilac, only tiny blossoms. If you prune off all the new growth, it won't bloom.

Dwarf spruce tree is 9 years old. Planted in ground. I keep it about 16 inches high. Initially, 2/3 of total braches were pruned off at trunk to open tree up. And many laterals on branches were pruned out, too. Each March, ends of branches and most of new growth is pruned off.

Little bush ?? has all lower branches removed to show truck so only top has foliage. Slow grower about a foot high growing in clump of sedum ground cover plants.

Yellow boxwood bush is 4 years old and about a foot tall. Each February before new growth starts all of last years new growth is pruned off at trunk and ends of branches are selectively cut off. It is planted among evergreens that were hybridized to stay under 10 inches tall without pruning.
