| The secret to creating small, interesting shrubs and trees for a garden railroad is to buy cheap plants, whack off the branches until you like how they look, and enjoy them. If they die, buy more and try again. Or give up on that variety and try something else. As you get more confident, buy more expensive plants. Practice makes perfect!. ;-) | |

Dwarf spruce tree is 9 years old. Planted in ground. I keep it about 16 inches high. Initially, 2/3 of total braches were pruned off at trunk to open tree up. And many laterals on branches were pruned out, too. Each March, ends of branches and most of new growth is pruned off. |

Yellow boxwood bush is 4 years old and about a foot tall. Each February before new growth starts all of last years new growth is pruned off at trunk and ends of branches are selectively cut off. It is planted among evergreens that were hybridized to stay under 10 inches tall without pruning. |
