 Family Relations in Scotland
Newspaper article sent to my Grandfather from relative in Aberdeen Scotland. The gentleman in the picture is Charles Allan, my Grandfather's namesake and the son of my Grandfather's nephew John R. Allan. Text of article is below.

Date of publication unknown, perhaps around 1970.

HOLD IT, Dad!

You'd hardly think the strapping kilted fellow in our picture was an assistant lecturer in economics. But 'supporting' his family is a piece of cake for Aberdeenshire loon Charles Allan.

Born in Methlick, the son of John R. Allan, the novelist and grandson of Maitland Mackie, well-known Tarves farming personality, Charles is a Highland games enthusiast when he's not teaching at Dundee's Queen's College.

He has been teaching there since 1963 and takes up the post of lecturer in October. When Charles and his wife, Fiona, were married, they provided a new slant on an old angle. He was the student, his wife the lecturer.

"I was an assistant lecturer in clinical chemistry at Aberdeen University," said Fiona, "Charles was an economics student."

He graduated with honors  in economic science from Aberdeen in 1962, and spent a year at Glasgow University before going to Dundee.

Charles first became interested in Highland games  when he was 14, starting by competing in running and jumping events.

"Then, as I became heavier, slower, and stronger, I started tossing the caber, throwing the 56 lb. weight and the hammer.

The Allans, who live in Dundee, have three children -- Two-year-old John is pictured here on Charles' right arm, three-year-old Sarah is round his neck, and eight-month-old baby Jay is on wife Fiona's arm.
